Optimus is Tesla’s prototype of a humanoid robot - work on the experimental test robot had begun this February, the company said.
As two boards, with two robot palms forming a heart, slid apart onstage, out walked ‘Optimus’ to cheers and applause. It walked up to the front of the stage and waved at Tesla CEO Elon Musk, standing at the other end of the stage.

Another video, retweeted by Musk, showed Optimus waving at the crowd and dancing. “This is literally the first time the robot has operated without a tether was onstage tonight,” the presenter said as the humanoid robot walked back.
According to Musk, millions of Optimus can be produced by the electric vehicle maker and sold for $20,000 apiece - way cheaper than some of Tesla’s cars.
The company will be ready to take orders in the next three to five years, Musk said, reported news agency Reuters. “There's still a lot of work to be done to refine Optimus and prove it,” Musk said, adding later, “I think Optimus is going to be incredible in five or 10 years, like mind blowing.”
“Optimus is not directly in line with accelerating sustainable energy,” Musk said. "I think the mission does somewhat broaden with the advent of Optimus to - you know, I don't know: making the future awesome.”
Musk even posed with ‘Optimus’ after the launch and posted a photo on Twitter, followed by another announcement.
“Naturally, there will be a catgirl version of our Optimus robot,” the Tesla chief, known for his shock-and-awe announcements, wrote.
