The National Green Tribunal upheld the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority's order to demolish the shack over coastal rule violations.
The Curlie's restaurant in Goa will be demolished soon for allegedly flouting the coastal zone regulations. The National Green Tribunal, or NGT, upheld the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority's earlier order to demolish the iconic shack.
The green court's order comes days after BJP leader Sonali Phogat was allegedly drugged at a party in Curlie’s hours before her death.
The order to demolish the structure was first passed by the Goa coastal authority at its final meeting in July.
The NGT was hearing an appeal challenging the order of the GCZMA directing the razing of the iconic restaurant. The co-owner of the shack, Linet Nunes, had filed a petition before the green court after taking the matter to the High Court of Bombay in Goa and, eventually, the Supreme Court.
The complainant, Kashinath Shetye, had moved the GCZMA claiming that the bar and nightclub had violated the Coastal Regulation Zone rules of the central and state authorities.
The demolition order was in response to his petition which was later challenged and the Supreme Court directed the NGT to decide the matter.
THE SONALI PHOGAT CONNECT
BJP leader Sonali Phogat, who was declared dead on arrival at a hospital in Goa last month, was allegedly drugged at Curlie's by her two aides.
Although the police had initially registered an accidental death report on Phogat's death, they soon turned it into a murder investigation. This was triggered by CCTV footage from the restaurant where the TikTok star was seen hours before her death.
Her aides have been arrested.
